Nitrox Scuba Diving Classes: Nitrox
is becoming more popular in recreational diving. You’ll probably
see a nitrox tank sitting in the rack on one of your next dive
trips. You’ll be asked if you’re planning on diving with nitrox
when you purchase your next dive computer. You’ll see courses
offered in class schedules.
What IS Nitrox and how can it benefit you? What’s wrong with
diving on air?
Air contains two major components, Oxygen (21%) and Nitrogen
(79%). As you learned in your scuba diving class, it is the
nitrogen that limits your no-stop diving times. Nitrogen in
normal air limits your bottom time, the number of dives you can
do in a day and requires a longer surface interval between
dives. Nitrogen is also the cause of decompression sickness.
Nitrox - also called Enriched Air Nitrox (EAN) or Oxygen
Enriched Air (OEA) - is air that has more oxygen in it.
Consequently is has less nitrogen. With less nitrogen in the
breathing mixture your body will absorb less nitrogen and you
will have less of a nitrogen obligation.
Seven Seas offers NAUI’s newest Nitrox course. This 8 hour
course will teach you how nitrox works and how to take advantage
of its benefits.
